Who We Are

The Other Hill is located on the unceded territories of the Anishinabeg Algonquin nation, in the area commonly known as Sandy Hill Ottawa. With multiple venues and outdoor spaces along Laurier Avenue East, this project brings together Canada’s leading thinkers, authors, artists, musicians, historians and activists, to inspire the conversations we need to have.

A mere 20-minute walk from Parliament Hill, The Other Hill strives to create an alternative space for important dialogue. This area was once home to Canada’s political elite at the top of the hill and working-class folks at the bottom, it now boasts an increasingly diverse population, with embassies, rooming houses and family homes sitting side by side. It is made even more current with the presence of leading NGOs, and the infusion of a young, energetic student population thanks to its proximity to the University of Ottawa.

What began as a grassroots effort to preserve the built heritage and share the political history of Sandy Hill through a project called Prime Minister’s Row, has now been transformed into a much larger and broader initiative. One that aims to bring stately homes and important historic buildings to life, by making them into spaces where people gather to consider not just our past, but our present and future. It endeavours to foster the kind of dynamism and intellectual vibrancy that belongs in a nation’s capital.

Board of Directors

Over the last ten years, community members have remained on the Board and worked through some very difficult times to see this vision through. Their commitment has ensured the organization stayed intact, and they are the reason we are able to proceed with an expanded vision today. We owe them a collective thank you for their dedication and commitment to this project.

We have recently had some new and talented members join our efforts, both as Board members and as volunteers and collaborators. These people are equally committed to preserving the built-heritage of the area, while sharing the larger vision for a vibrant capital city. We welcome their energy and enthusiasm.
